The road to Dalen
Dalen lies at the innermost part of Telemark, surrounded by mountainsides and calm waters. The journey here has always been part of the experience.
By car
Follow the E134 from Oslo via Kongsberg and Notodden, then continue towards Kviteseid on Route 38. The final stretch passes through a narrow, green valley — best enjoyed at a slower pace.
From Bergen, you may travel via the scenic Suleskar Road (230 km) or Haukelifjell (340 km).
Approximate distances:
- Bø – 80 km
- Skien – 140 km
- Larvik – 160 km
- Torp airport – 180 km
- Kristiansand – 215 km
- Oslo – 230 km
- Gardermoen – 270 km
- Bergen – 340 km
- Stavanger – 350 km (via Suleskar 230 km)
By canal boat
Take the train to Skien and board M/S Henrik Ibsen or M/S Victoria. The boats depart in the morning and spend the day travelling through 18 locks and a total elevation change of 72 metres, with Dalen Hotel as the final destination.
By bus
From Oslo and Bergen, Telemark Bilruter (route 180) operates services to Åmot, where you transfer to a local Vy minibus for the final stretch down to Dalen. Norway Bussekspress is also an alternative.
We recommend checking current timetables before travelling.
