About Dalen Hotel

Dalen Hotel opened in 1894, at the innermost part of the Telemark Canal. Since then, travellers have made their way here not simply to spend the night, but to experience something that stays with them a little longer.

Built in a romantic Swiss style, the hotel is defined by dragon heads, towers and historic details that still shape the character of the house today. Yet it is not only the history that defines Dalen, but the way it continues to live on through the people who arrive here.

At Dalen, something happens to the pace of those who visit. Days unfold a little more slowly. Conversations are allowed the time they need. The quiet lounges, the light across Lake Bandak and the rhythm of the house make it easy to settle into a calmer pace.

Some come here seeking stillness. Others for the experiences found in the surrounding landscape. Most discover that the two belong naturally together.

Your journey here sets the tone

For more than a hundred years, Dalen has marked the end point for travellers on the Telemark Canal. Arriving by canal boat remains one of the most distinctive ways to reach the hotel — a journey through locks, water, history and changing landscapes that gradually lead you here.

The experience at Dalen rarely lies in one grand moment, but rather in the sum of many smaller ones. In the way you are welcomed. In meals shaped by the ingredients from the surrounding region. In the informal moments being allowed to remain just that, while the more formal naturally finds its place when needed.

Perhaps that is exactly why Dalen stays with you long after the journey home begins.
