The saga of Dalen
The Saga of Dalen Hotel
The adventure begins
Dalen Hotel opened in 1894, at the innermost part of the Telemark Canal. Then, as now, it was never intended to be an ordinary hotel. It became the beginning of a story that is still being written today.
With its towers, spires and dragon heads, the building rose as something entirely unique in the landscape — a place many have since described as a Soria Moria at the end of the waterway.
Travellers arrived by canal boat after long journeys through locks and lakes. Here, in the heart of inner Telemark, stood a hotel that combined nature, architecture and hospitality in a way few had experienced before.
The stories still live on and are shared every evening in the fireplace lounge.
Greatness and silence
In the years that followed, Dalen became a destination for wealthy travellers from Norway and abroad.
The hotel was modern for its time, with both electricity and running water, and offered a level of comfort and hospitality rarely found in Norway at the time.
But the world changed. New railways, roads and travel routes meant that fewer travellers arrived via the canal. War and changing ownership left their mark on the hotel, and over time both activity and grandeur gradually faded. Eventually, the hotel remained as a quiet reminder of what it once had been.
When everything was at stake
Several times, Dalen came close to disappearing.
Plans for demolition and extensive renovation were discussed, and at periods the hotel stood without both direction and activity. Still, there was something about the place that meant it was never entirely forgotten.
In the 1990s, the hotel reopened following restoration work, but it was not until Norwegian Hospitality Group took over the property in 2006 that the effort to restore Dalen’s original character truly gathered momentum.
The ambition was clear: to preserve what was genuine while making it relevant once again.
The adventure continues
Today, Dalen Hotel has once again become a destination.
Not as a copy of what it once was, but as a continuation of what this place has always been — a hotel where the experience lies in the whole. In the journey here. In the surroundings. In the calm. In the details.
The canal boats still arrive in Dalen, just as they have for more than a hundred years. Guests arrive, stay for a while and continue their journey.
And so, Dalen remains a place to discover — and a place many return to.
